Sr. Policy Manager, Criminal Justice
Carlton T. Mayers, II leads the Criminal Justice Reform policy at Heartland Alliance in Illinois as the Senior Policy Manager. He received his J.D. and Master’s in Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School and his B.S. in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University. Before joining Heartland Alliance, Mr. Mayers directed Southern Poverty Law Center’s Criminal Justice Reform program in Florida and worked for NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. in Washington, D.C. as Policy Counsel for the Policing Reform Campaign. He directed the national Criminal Justice Reform program at NAACP National Office in Baltimore, Maryland, and co-authored the “NAACP Born Suspect: Racial Profiling Report” published in 2014. Throughout his career, Mr. Mayers advocates across the country for the application of national best practices to state and local advocacy of criminal justice reform. Including supporting advocacy efforts in Ferguson, Missouri, Baltimore, Maryland, North Charleston, South Carolina, and New York City. Carlton was born and raised in New York City.
