“If a veteran is struggling with homelessness or is at risk of losing their housing, Heartland Alliance can help,” said Jeffrey Nelson, program manager for the Heartland Alliance program. “We understand the challenges they are facing. Once we know they need help, we can usually get in there and make a difference right away.”
SSVF provides supportive services for low or very low-income veteran families residing in or transitioning to permanent housing. These services are designed to increase the housing stability of veteran families that are at-risk of or experiencing homelessness.
Services include housing stability case management, emergency financial assistance to acquire or maintain permanent housing, tenant rights and responsibilities education and support, asset development and financial literacy, job readiness and employment placement services, and referrals for health care, daily living, wellness, transportation, legal, and child care services.
To date, 252 veteran families have been helped by Heartland Alliance’s program.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that around 63,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. By that estimate, veterans comprise 10 percent of America’s homeless population.
