The Marjorie Kovler Commemorates the UN Day in Support of Survivors of Torture

June 26 is both heartening and heavy, as we commemorate the United Nations International Day in Support of Survivors of Torture. Though June 26 sheds light on the global movement to end torture, it also recalls many harrowing experiences for survivors – including some of the Marjorie Kovler Center’s clients, volunteers, and staff.

On June 26 of every year, the Kovler Center commemorates the day with a community candle lighting ceremony in Chicago. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 ceremony was held virtually. While the commemoration looked a bit different, the essence and heart remains the same – to unite in solidarity with survivors and call for an end to torture worldwide. Though suffering and pain persist, so do hope and healing. The human spirit is resilient and together, we will build a world free of torture.

We invite you to watch a recording of the June 26, 2020 commemoration.
