Help the Afghan People

Donate to Support Afghan Families

In the aftermath of the bombings at the Kabul airport and the U.S. withdrawal, Afghanistan is experiencing a grave humanitarian crisis as the Taliban regime takes hold. Afghan women, girls, LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities, and members of religious and minority groups are in significant danger. Human rights defenders, journalists, and people who have worked with the U.S. government are also at significant risk under Taliban rule.

Heartland Alliance unites in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and seeks to provide safety, healing, and justice for the Afghan people. As a human rights organization, Heartland Alliance has been supporting vulnerable people including immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers for more than 130 years.

The Alliance welcomes Afghans families and unaccompanied children to Chicago as we work to resettle them and connect them to essential services, including education, employment, housing, case management, and wellness and family support services. Our Marjorie Kovler Center offers trauma-informed and culturally responsive mental health services and coordinated care to survivors of torture and trauma. We are also working in collaboration with other advocates to ensure that the U.S. government upholds its responsibility to provide protections for Afghans seeking safety and healing.

Please join us in supporting the Afghan people by taking action in any of the following ways:

  • Donate now to help increase access to mental health services for Afghan and immigrant families.
  • Contact your U.S. Senators here and call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to take action. See below for specific language on action.
  • Call the White House at (202) 456-1111 and leave a message on the Comments Line, which is currently available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. CTST.
  • Learn more and share Heartland Alliance’s statement regarding Afghan immigrants.
  • Shape the conversation and mobilize support for this important issue on Facebook and Twitter.

Our call to action urges the U.S. government to:

  • Sustain all efforts to save the lives of human rights advocates and unite with the international community to provide protections for vulnerable Afghans, especially beyond the August 31st targeted deadline for evacuations
  • Provide a robust humanitarian response to people experiencing displacement, as well as people remaining in the country;
  • Immediately create and implement pathways to protection for all Afghans seeking refuge from violence, including expanding U.S. refugee resettlement numbers and capacity, designating Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status, and increasing U.S. asylum processing;
  • Not recognize or support the Taliban regime through any deal made with the U.S.; and
  • Continue to provide humanitarian funding to support the most vulnerable Afghans by supporting women’s organizations regionally and ensuring they have the support needed to supplant U.S. funding in country.
