Heartland Housing: New Affordable Housing, New Community

37th Street Apartments was born out of the idea that we must adapt to meet the needs of a society in flux. Research from our own Social IMPACT Research Center shows that nonworking adults over 55 in the Milwaukee region are struggling to make ends meet. The baby-boomer generation is shifting the national demographic, increasing the population of seniors who need housing supports. At the same time, housing stock across the country grows more unaffordable for all populations.
We’re facing two scenarios that, when combined, will cause a dramatic housing crisis – but Heartland Alliance believes that both situations can be addressed with brick-and-mortar solutions.

This October, the grand opening of the 37th Street Apartments in Milwaukee added over 40 new units of affordable senior housing in the community. It is a revitalization of a historical landmark in a quiet community, and a direct response to the needs of the city of Milwaukee.

But for Ms. Boyd, one of 37th Street’s first tenants, it’s a new chance for safety, comfort, and opportunity.

“This opportunity meant a lot to me. I had wanted to move for quite some time, but I couldn’t find anything nice that also fit my range,” Ms. Boyd said. “When I first saw the outside of the building I fell in love with it.”

Heartland Alliance believes in building quality housing based on the specific needs of the community. For the elders of the city and county of Milwaukee, that means accessibility, community, and family. Heartland Alliance worked closely with Community First, a local housing organization with deep roots to the city’s west side.
With a finger on the pulse of the community, 37th Street Apartment’s studio, single, and double bed units provide exactly what is needed for a comfortable affordable place to call home.

“This is a much more accessible place for me. Where I was before, it was hard to get around because it had two floors,” said Ms. Boyd. “I wanted to find something that was easier to live in, but still near my family.”

Ms. Boyd spent most of her life in Milwaukee. As she enters her golden years, she wanted to remain in a community that she has long called home. Now, she enjoys having family and friends over in her spacious living room, full of natural light and comfort.

“I feel so comfortable here. I’m excited to make this a home. I’m getting a little to old to keep moving, and I plan on staying here for a long time.”
As Heartland Alliance’s fifth development in Milwaukee, 37th Street Apartments is the next step in ensuring housing and safety for all residents in Milwaukee. More importantly, it’s the next opportunity to develop strong communities in the city’s west side. With units still available (apply here), Ms. Boyd is ready for new neighbors to call frineds.

“You know, this is for folks getting a little older, and it’s perfect for that. I’ve been handing out flyers myself, I think it’s just a great.”
