This month, President Elect Joe Biden recognized and thanked the Transgender community in his acceptance speech – a first recognition of its kind. As notable as this moment may be, there are still tremendous barriers to overcome in the effort to build safe communities for Transgender individuals. A racist and punitive criminal justice system, the segregation of housing, healthcare, and other services, and the continuation of violence toward Transgender people all continue to disempower, disenfranchise, and otherwise harm Transgender communities.
At Heartland Alliance, we know that we cannot achieve equity and opportunity for all without uplifting voices with first-hand understanding of how these inequities continue to play out. That is why we feel it is critically important to make space for dialogue around the experience of Transgender people, and to further build programmatic and policy approaches that place the narratives and experiences of Transgender people at the center.
Over the past month, leaders from across Heartland Alliance who identify as Transgender shared their perspectives and thoughts around these barriers and what must be done to achieve the goal of equity and opportunity for ALL people.
