I was born and raised in Austin, and gun violence has affected my family a lot. I’ve lost family members, including a brother, to gun violence.
When I was a participant in READI Chicago, I started opening up about it, and seeing other participants dealing with it made it hit home. Now I’m a crew chief for READI, and I feel good helping and supporting my community. I’ve been down the same path as our participants, and I know what they’re going through. We’re working to live a better life than we did before.
I want people to know that it’s going to take more than one person to make things better. It’s going to take the entire community to stop gun violence. We need to make things better for our kids and families so they don’t have to go through what we went through.
